Speech over the Internet |
|
|
|
Speech over the Internet, often called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a major new technology that is now becoming
a viable alternative to normal phone calls. After earlier disappointments the quality of service and products available are
steadily improving.
The technology is becoming widely adopted in the corporate sector where data convergence (the combining of speech and computer data
across a single network) is the current hot technology.
For the consumer the most widespread use of the technology has been to allow cheap international calls where the call starts on a
PC and goes across the Internet to a gateway close to its destination. It is then routed on to the public switched telephone network
(PSTN) so that it appears to the receiver to be a normal phone call.
As with all major technology advances, new ideas which will change the way we work, will spawn from this technology. Some are
already in development. Others are still on the drawing board.
We have recently won a SMART award from the UK Government for the development of novel VoIP applications. If you wish to know about
our work, please contact us.
